Tyrell Gibbs, a 34‑year‑old security guard working at the NYC luxury boutique, is being praised as a hero after stopping 2 masked suspects.
NEW YORK — Tyrell Gibbs, a 34‑year‑old security guard working at the SoHo luxury resale boutique Rebelonging, is being praised as a hero after stopping two masked suspects from forcing their way into the store, according to surveillance footage and store officials.
The dramatic encounter unfolded on Monday afternoon, June 23 and quickly went viral, drawing millions of views and widespread admiration.
NYC Security Guard, A Former Football Player, Used Training to Stop the Rush
Gibbs told The New York Post he had been on the job less than two weeks when the attempted robbery happened. Moreover, he said he relied on instincts from his youth football days as a tight end and receiver to block the suspects at the door.
“Either you step up, or you step down,” he said, describing the moment he braced himself and pushed back against the pair.
Suspects Flee After Failed Break‑In
According to Rebelonging staff, the confrontation began when a girl entered the store moments before two masked individuals tried to rush the entrance. Then Gibbs planted himself at the doorway, using his body to keep the suspects from getting inside.
Footage shows him shoving them back repeatedly until they fled down West Broadway toward Canal Street. Police are reviewing video and searching for the getaway vehicle.
Community Praises Gibbs’ Quick Action
The incident sparked widespread praise online. Additionally, store owners said Gibbs works four jobs to support his family while putting his entrepreneurial goals on hold.
They rewarded him with a raise and bonus. Meanwhile, they launched a fundraiser to help him pursue future business plans, noting his dedication and professionalism.
Gibbs, who grew up in Harlem and Brooklyn, said he acted to protect everyone inside the store. “I didn’t want to harm anybody,” he said. “I just wanted to keep that door closed.”
His quick response has made him a symbol of courage in a neighborhood known for high‑end retail and rising theft attempts.
