COVINGTON, La. — Chris Rushing died Wednesday, July 1, while trying to save his granddaughter from drowning in Bayou Lacombe, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office. His family and community say he died acting on instinct and love.

A Rescue Attempt That Turned Tragic

Deputies said the child fell into the water near Lake Road. Rushing jumped in to reach her but began struggling and went under. A woman then entered the bayou and pulled the girl out.

Fire personnel arrived at 7:43 p.m. Five swimmers searched the water and found Rushing. First responders pulled him out, performed lifesaving measures and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, the sheriff’s office said.

Chris Rushing: A City Employee Known for His Kindness

Rushing worked in Covington’s Cultural Arts Department and built a reputation for his upbeat personality and willingness to help others. City officials said his death has deeply affected coworkers.

“Chris will be remembered for his ever-present smile, the joy that emanated from him and for his innate desire to help others,” Mayor Mark Johnson said. “His passing is very difficult to process.”

Councilman John Botsford said members plan to honor Rushing in the coming weeks.

GoFundMe Created; Calls Him a Hero

Rushing’s family said he acted without hesitation when his granddaughter fell into the water. A GoFundMe created to support the family says he “sacrificed his life” to save her.

Relatives described him as a devoted grandfather who centered his life around his grandchildren. The fundraiser is helping with funeral expenses and unexpected costs of Rushing’s untimely death.
