The Patriot’s Pen
The Patriot’s Pen is an essay contest given by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
What Patriotism means to me.
To me Patriotism means freedom. I think of freedom because in some countries the father chooses who the daughter marries. However, in America we choose who we want to marry. Also in other countries they tell you how to live, what to eat, and what to wear. This is not the case in the United States because we have the freedom to decide how to live, what to eat, and what we want to wear. I think that many foreign governments should promote the idea of freedom in their countries. If these foreign countries have our rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, it would be a better world. For example, women in Iraq have to cover up their body. The only thing they can show are their hands. I feel bad because these women are abused just like women in Afghanistan. In both countries women have basically no rights at all. For instance, if a woman tries to run for a political office in the Middle East, that individual is looked upon as being a joke.
In America women have the freedom to wear what they want, have a job, and run for political office. For instance, in America if a woman wants to dress the way she wants she is allowed to do so. In addition, women can go to college and get educated and pursue any career she chooses. Back in the beginning of the country women were not allowed to vote, and own property. Now women can vote and own property without any questions asked. Besides owning property and being allowed to vote, women can run for political office. For instance, Hillary Clinton is a great inspiration to women because she became the Secretary of State and could still become the United States’ first women president. In closing, because of this freedom that is alive and well in the United States, this makes me a proud patriot. Therefore, patriotism means freedom.
