Last Friday, the students from Ghana along with the students from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School had a session on remembering Pearl Harbor.
Ghana Session on Pearl Harbor
This session had two special guests. One guest returning from heart surgery was Lou Parisi. Lou Parisi served in the Pacific theater of World War II. The other guest served in the Korean War and that was Alfonso Freda.
Chorus
This session began with Ms. Elgart’s chorus singing three songs, the National Anthem, God Bless America, and America The Beautiful. Lou Parisi, Alfonso Freda, and all the students thought that Ms. Elgart’s chorus did a great job.
Pearl Harbor presentation
After Ms. Elgart’s chorus was finished with their musical presentation, Juna Weedon presented a power point presentation created by Xaturiha Simms.
The presentation went into how the Japanese surprised attacked the U.S. Naval base at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 which “a date which will live in infamy” (Franklin Roosevelt 32nd President). The attack brought the United States into World War II.
This attack was avenged by Lieutenant Colonel James “Jimmy” Doolittle, leading the Doolittle raid over Tokyo and the United States dropping the atomic bombs on Japan. Atomic bomb code named Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima. That took place on August 6, 1945. The second atomic bomb code named Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945.
War Comparisons
After the power point presentation, Lou Parisi spoke to the students about Pearl Harbor and made a comparison to the attack that brought the United Stats into World War II to the American Civil War, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the current wars of today.
Lou Parisi told the students in Ghana and at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, that we need to find a way to have ever lasting peace.
Taking over the presentation was Alfonso Freda who also told the students that we should not give up and continue to try to have peace in the world because war was not the answer.
The students from Ghana asked the two guests multiple questions regarding their service in the military and their thoughts regarding Pearl Harbor.
