7 juveniles charged in viral attack on mother, child near Chicago school

Seven juveniles, all 13 years old or younger, now face battery charges after a violent attack on a mother and her young son near a Chicago elementary school,  WGN TV reports.

The incident, recorded on Nov. 17, drew national attention after video of the assault spread across social media platforms.

Chicago mother and son attack near South Side school leads to arrests

The footage shows a 33-year-old woman and her child walking near Orville T. Bright Elementary School on the city’s Far South Side. A group of students follows them, shouting as tensions rise. Moments later, several children surround the pair. Two begin punching the victims, and both fall to the ground during the attack.

The mother and son were then jumped by the group. The two had to be transferred to a local hospital for treatment and were later released.

The video sparked widespread outrage across the country. Parents, educators, and community advocates called for swift action against the attackers. Many said the attack highlights growing concerns around bullying and the need for early intervention.

The mother alleged her son had been bullied at Orville T. Bright Elementary School for over two years but the administration did nothing to protect him.

Prosecutors later charged seven children in connection with the assault. Those charged include:

  • Three 10-year-old boys
  • A 10-year-old girl
  •  An 11-year-old girl
  •  A 12-year-old boy
  • A 13-year-old girl

Children Released, Referred to Counseling

Chicago police said all seven children were released from custody and referred to counseling services, per WGN-TV. Officials noted that the case remains active and that additional steps may follow as authorities review the circumstances.
