12‑year‑old Georgia girl dies after fight outside school bus, family says she was bullied
Jada West’s family says she had been bullied since enrolling at Mason Creek Middle School in January.
VILLA RICA, Ga. — Police in Georgia are investigating the death of a 12-year-old girl who died after a fight near a school bus stop.
Jada West collapsed near her home in Villa Rica, Ga on March 5 after the confrontation. She died on March 8, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Jada West’s Fight with Student Started as an Argument on the Bus
According to West’s aunt, De’Quala McClendon, the dispute began on the school bus and escalated after the driver told several students to get off.
Video Captures the Fight
Cellphone video shared by McClendon on Facebook reportedly shows the two Mason Creek Middle School students arguing as other children gather around. Onlookers can be heard questioning why the dispute was happening, while the other girl boasts about her reputation for fighting.
The video shows the pair dropping their backpacks before punching and slapping each other. They eventually hit the pavement with a loud thud as students react in shock. A woman steps in moments later and tells them to stop.
Medical Emergency After the Fight
West managed to stand and walk away but collapsed before reaching her home, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. A friend ran to alert her parents, and first responders found the 12‑year‑old unresponsive. CPR was performed before she was taken to a local hospital.
McClendon said West’s heart stopped before she reached the hospital and that she suffered severe brain damage.
West never regained consciousness.
Family Says Jada West Was Bullied
West had transferred to Mason Creek Middle School in January. Her mother told FOX 5 Atlanta that her daughter had been bullied repeatedly since enrolling.
“They failed my sister’s child because we are broken by this,” McClendon wrote on Facebook, calling Jada a quiet student who had never been in trouble.
Questions About Why Students Were Taken Off the Bus
The family told FOX 5 Atlanta they were confused about why the other girl was riding the same bus, saying she does not live in the neighborhood. They also questioned why the bus driver ordered students involved in an argument to get off instead of de‑escalating the situation.
School District Responds
The Douglas County School System said in a statement it was “deeply saddened” by West’s death and offered condolences to her family. A spokesperson said the incident occurred after dismissal and off school property, placing the investigation under police jurisdiction.
Investigation Ongoing
The Villa Rica Police Department said an autopsy is underway to determine West’s cause of death. No charges have been filed, and no one else in the video has been publicly identified. Police are working with the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office to review evidence and determine whether charges are appropriate.
