Dr. Thomas D. Williams Sr., the father of television host Wendy Williams, has died at 94. His granddaughter, journalist Alex Finnie confirmed his passing in a heartfelt tribute on Instagram.

Family Confirms Death Through Public Tribute

Finnie described her grandfather as a guiding force in their family.

She wrote that it came “after 94 years of extraordinary love, strength, brilliance, and wisdom.” She also said he remained a steady presence who shaped their values and community ties.

Granddaughter Shares Detailed Tribute

Finnie honored him as “a man of great intellect — an author, educator and keeper of historical facts.” She added that he poured into both family and community, leaving a legacy rooted in education and historical preservation.

She also noted that he now joins his late wife, Shirley Williams, who died in 2020.

Conservatorship Context Surrounding the Family

Williams’ death comes as Wendy Williams remains under a court‑ordered guardianship imposed in 2022. The arrangement limits her travel and daily decisions. Williams has publicly said she feels restricted by the order, and her family has raised concerns about transparency.

Press‑Documented Visit to Her Father

In early 2025, press outlets reported that a judge granted Williams permission to travel from New York to Miami for her father’s 94th birthday. Reporters noted that she received a two‑day window to visit him, with security accompanying her during the trip. The visit followed her public statements that she had been blocked from seeing him under the guardianship.

Williams Sr.’s Legacy

A Lincoln University graduate, Williams Sr. was widely respected as an educator, historian and author. His work emphasized scholarship, storytelling and the preservation of community history.

In 1969, Dr. Williams became the first Black principal at the former River Street School in Red Bank, New Jersey.

He also appeared on The Wendy Williams Show during family segments, which introduced him to national audiences.

The Williams’ family have roots in New Jersey where they raised their children in Asbury Park and Ocean Township.

Williams Sr was a few days shy of his 95th birthday. The family did not release a cause of death.
