What happened to Trayvon Martin? Teen’s family demands answers!
The family of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin demands answers in the slain teen’s death.
It has been a week since the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in front of his father’s home in Sanford, Fla., and the family is demanding answers.
Trayvon Martin: Was He Murdered?
Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened that led to the fatal shooting of the teen.
According to his father and step-mother, Trayvon was visiting from Miami. He walked to a local convenience store. Upon returning to the gated community, he was confronted by George Zimmerman, a self-proclaimed neighborhood watch captain. Trayvon was shot just step’s from his father’s home.
George Zimmerman, who is a 26-year-old college student, has since turned himself in. However, he has not been charged. This is pending further investigation. Trayvon’s family is demanding answers.
“My son left Sanford, Florida in a body bag. George Zimmerman went home to sleep in his own bed. Its senseless and the police in Sanford isn’t giving any answers,” Trayvon’s father Tracy Martin told the local Fox News affiliate.
The family has hired attorney Ben Crump. They are pressuring the police to release the 911 tape in hopes it can lead to more answers.
Trayvon Martin was followed
According to an update by the Huffinton Post, the Chief of the Sandford Police Department stated the account Ben Crump and the family gave is correct. That is, Zimmerman saw Trayvon walking from the store. Subsequently, Zimmerman called 911 to report a suspicious man and was told not to follow him.
“For some reason he felt that Trayvon, the way that he was walking or appeared seemed suspicious to him,” Lee said. “He called this in and at one part of this initial call [the dispatcher] recommends him not to follow Trayvon. A police officer is on the way at that point.”
“I believe that Mr. Zimmerman was trying to, by his account, find an address to give the officers and also trying to keep Trayvon in eyesight.”
Zimmerman told the police that Trayvon noticed that he was being followed and asked, “what’s your problem?”
That’s when a “physical confrontation” ensued, Lee said. And moments later, Trayvon was shot.
Lee said that Zimmerman has a legal permit to carry the weapon used in the shooting, and that he told police that he shot Trayvon in self-defense.
“He felt the need to defend himself,” Lee said. “ I don’t think it was his intent to go and shoot somebody” that night.
Ongoing Investigation
The chief said the police have met with Zimmerman on two to three separate occasions, and their investigation should be wrapped up this week. He said all of the evidence will be delivered to the State Attorney’s Office soon after.
“We’re going to present all the information. If they feel that based on all of the evidence that we’re able to produce that Mr. Zimmerman has satisfied the requirement that he shot in self defense, they may, but if not, he would be charge with some type of homicide or manslaughter,” Lee said.
“It is certain and absolutely a tragedy, especially for the Martin Family,” Lee said. “No one expects their teen son to go the store and never come back.”
