On September 23, 2016, a video conference was set up between the students in Ghana and the students from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School.

History of Africa

The students from Ghana gave the MLK students a wonderful presentation on the History of Africa, Ghana’s president, the most popular sport in Ghana, soccer, food, the meaning of “I have kept what I learned,” and the many national parks of Ghana such as Bia National Park, Bui National Park, Digya National Park, Kakum National Park, Paga Crocodile Park, and Mole National Park.

MLK students presentation

After the students in Ghana were finished with their wonderful presentation, the MLK students had multiple things to share. For instance, Ms. Major Phillips’ students presented written reports about the history and geography of Asbury Park.

Science presentation

After her students presented their reports, sixth grade science teacher Tim Mason gave a presentation on what his students were covering. The project his students were working on was “how we use light to see.” From there Kevin Barksdale, Nasier Clarke, Leslie Gil-Garica, Ahmir Hare, Shanice Davis, Ahmir Hare, Guerlandie Jean Pierre, Perla Perez-Hernandez, Diana Ramirez, Diego Perez, Cerold Etienne, Davenson Joinvilmar, Peter Altidor, Sukaina Jacquet, Claire Betschaida Achedou, Warren Riddick, Dakim Randolph, Kyel Jones, Ta’Jier Burrus, Kay’sionna Clarke, and Qiarah Church produced projects that were presented to the students in Ghana.

Those projects were:

In addition, Amira Gates gave a presentation on Positive Behavior Support In Schools also known as PBSIS. The purpose of this presentation was to show what was being put into effect at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School such as:

1. Increase available instructional time

2. Encourage and support pro-social student behavior

3. Use a continuum of function-based problem solving to address behavior and conduct issues

4. Create environments conducive to including students with disabilities and behavior support needs.

Finally, just for fun. Because Darth Vader gave the Ghana students a presentation last year, Mr. Wronko showed the students in Ghana a fan made film of Batman versus Darth Vader.
