Father fatally shot when confronting daughter’s cyberbully, family says
Brandon Curtis had hoped to put an end to the harassing messages that a boy was sending his 15-year-old daughter
Brandon Curtis, 35, of Houston had hoped to put an end to the harassing messages that a boy was sending his 15-year-old daughter for nine months, news station ABC 13 reported.
But when Curtis confronted the teen who was cyberbullying his daughter, the father of five would end up fatally shot.
Authorities said the fatal encounter happened after Curtis took his daughter to fight other teens. However, Curtis’ wife and sisters dispute that claim.
“I don’t feel like it’s right to let that come out like that. I’m angry. I’m angry about it,” said Curtis’ wife, Shantal Harris. “I know my husband. My husband is not like that.”
Curtis had spoken to the boy’s father before, but he went over with his daughter and son to address the issue again Friday evening at the home.
While outside the residence, the confrontation escalated to violence, ABC 13 reported.
A 20-year-old man told police that Curtis hit his younger brother, the outlet reported.
He claimed he then pulled out a gun to defend the teen boy and shot Curtis, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the outlet reported.
But Curtis’ family vehemently denies that he would have become physical with the boy.
“My brother would never put a hand on a child,” said Curtis’ sister, Jeran Perkins. “We want justice.”
The man was not charged and the case will be referred to a Harris County grand jury, according to the sheriff’s office.
