In Mississippi, 16-year-old  Quinton Simpson is making headlines as he kicks off his freshman year at Hinds Community College.

Mississippi teen Quinton Simpson is on his way to college

While most students his age are settling into their junior year of high school, Simpson is already immersed in college-level coursework, pursuing a degree in electro-mechanical engineering. This cutting-edge field fuses electrical and mechanical systems to drive modern innovation, and Simpson is tackling it with the same determination that helped him graduate early from Acellus Academy High School. His accelerated path is the result of intense focus, academic discipline, and a readiness to seize opportunity when it came.

Hard work pays off

Although Simpson didn’t initially aim to graduate early, he embraced the opportunity when it came. “People are very proud of me for doing this,” he said to WAPT 16 . “I do think it’s a big accomplishment because I graduated early. You can’t just go around and say I graduated early—that’s not something a lot of people do, and at 16. It feels amazing.”

His mother, Tiana Rhodes, a longtime educator, has supported him every step of the way. “It’s amazing because I’m here every step of the way,” she shared. “Living with a teacher has its challenges, but he knows that I value education.”

Quinton Simpson’s Scholarship and Musical Talent

Simpson’s talents extend beyond academics. He earned a music scholarship and now plays the tuba in the college band, adding rhythm and harmony to his already impressive resume. Looking ahead, he hopes to transfer to Jackson State University to continue his studies and expand his opportunities.

A Bright Future Ahead

Simpson’s story is a powerful reminder that age doesn’t define ambition. By seizing an unexpected opportunity and committing to excellence, he’s charting a path that inspires students and educators alike. As he balances engineering studies with musical performance, Simpson is proving that with focus and support, anything is possible—even college at 16.
