STEAM FAIR AND PROJECT GHANA’S FINAL SESSION

On June 12th, the Dr Martin Luther King Junior Middle School in Asbury Park New Jersey hosted the Steam Fair in which students used their creative skills to develop incredible science projects.

Ms. Hayes, eighth grade science teacher, Mrs. Durando, seventh grade science teacher, Mr. Mason, sixth grade science teacher, Mr. Cazeau, bilingual teacher, Ms. Philhower, instructional coach, Mrs. Kean, instructional coach, and with the assistance of the MLK staff helped students develop their science projects and prepare for presentations.

Some of the projects that were displayed by the students were as follows: how does a tower garden work, structure of an atom, wheat grass experiment, how to plant without land, applying the concepts of kinetic and potential energy to create balloon powered race cars using recycled materials such as water bottles, straws and bottle caps, measuring how air friction affects the speed at which they fall to the ground using a variety of shaped snowflakes, creating a reusable water bottle, balloon Inflation (put vinegar in a bottle and then put baking soda in a balloon, then put the balloon on top of the bottle to see if it inflates), and the creation of unsinkable boats.

There was much more from the students.

In addition, the students in Ghana participated in the Steam Fair with their presentation on the dangers and new use for plastic.

Final Ghana session

On June 13th, the final session for the year with Ghana was held. Mrs. Elgart’s had her chorus perform one last time.

The students in Ghana gave presentations on their Steam Fair project regarding plastic, the Black Panther compared to history, and they performed their own song about the wonderful sessions with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School.

Furthermore, Ed Johnson, former mayor of Asbury Park and member of Global Parliament of Mayors, attended this session. He informed all the students that for the next school year students from the Netherlands would be participating in future sessions. A lot to look forward to next year.
