Black Public Media launches $9M fund drive to preserve Black stories
The Harlem-based nonprofit has launched the Black Stories Production Fund to raise $9 million over two years.
Black Public Media (BPM) is fighting back after losing $1.8 million in federal funding.
About the Black Public Media fund
The Harlem-based nonprofit has launched the Black Stories Production Fund to raise $9 million over two years. The campaign invites donations from foundations, corporations and individuals, starting at just $5.
“We’re rebuilding a better, more responsive public media system,” said Leslie Fields-Cruz, BPM’s executive director. “Black voices deserve protection from political whims.”
Why this matters
Since 1979, BPM has invested over $17 million in Black-led films and media. Its support helped launch acclaimed works like Daughters of the Dust, I Am Not Your Negro, and Mr. Soul. Grantees have earned Emmys, Peabodys, Tellys, and Oscar nods.
BPM also nurtured the careers of Julie Dash, Stanley Nelson, Michèle Stephenson and Sam Pollard. Its signature series AfroPoP is now in its 17th season. The group’s podcast Keyshawn Solves It earned praise from Common Sense Media in 2023.
Beyond film, BPM trains artists in virtual and augmented reality. It provides access to equipment, funding and mentorship for emerging technologists.
“These stories educate, spark dialogue and illuminate solutions,” Fields-Cruz said. “We need everyone to help fuel their future.”
BPM aims to reach 1.8 million donors in year one. Supporters can give at this link.
