Autopsy says Demartravion “Trey” Reed’s cause of death was suicide
An autopsy performed on Trey Reed reveals the Delta State University student cause of death.
Authorities have released the autopsy results for Delta State University student Demartravion “Trey” Reed.
Reed, 21, was found hanging from a tree in the center of campus on Monday, September 15.

The Cleveland Police Department announced in a news release on Thursday, Sept. 18, that the autopsy determined Reed died by suicide.
“On September 17, 2025, the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy,” Cleveland Police Chief Travis Tribble said. “Findings were consistent with the initial investigation, determining the cause of death to be hanging and the manner of death as suicide. Final toxicology results are pending and may take two to four weeks to complete.”
The autopsy results align with the Bolivar County Coroner’s initial assessment. Officials found no wounds on Reed’s body that would suggest foul play. However, the investigation remains active.
Conflicting Reports Surround Delta State student Trey Reed’s Death as Family Seeks Independent Investigation
Conflicting accounts of the 21-year-old’s death have intensified calls for transparency and justice.
Attorney Vanessa J. Jones said the Grenada County Sheriff’s Department informed Reed’s family he died in his dorm bed. Meanwhile, Cleveland Police Chief Travis Tribble reported officers found Reed hanging from a tree in the center of campus.
“The family does not know exactly what happened,” Jones said. “We are seeking answers.”
Reed’s grandfather, J.B. Reed, told ABC affiliate WAPT that a Bolivar County official stated, “It was suicide,” without hesitation. That comment has raised concerns about premature conclusions and inconsistent communication.
Civil rights leaders, attorneys, and elected officials are demanding a full, independent investigation. Jones Law Firm confirmed the family will pursue a second autopsy and separate inquiry.
Attorney Ben Crump announced that Colin Kaepernick’s “Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative” will cover the cost of the independent autopsy.
At a press conference on September 17, Cleveland Mayor Billy Nowell and Police Chief Tribble stood by the official account. When asked about the dorm room claim, Tribble said he had no knowledge of calls received by Reed’s grandfather.
Reed’s death has sparked national concern. Advocates say the case highlights urgent issues around campus safety, mental health, and investigative transparency.
