Corsicana, TX — A Texas middle school student who assaulted former Collins Intermediate School Assistant Principal Candra Rogers and left her blind in one eye has been sentenced to 13 years in a state juvenile facility, Rogers confirmed to KWTX.

Sentence Handed Down

The student, who was 11 at the time of the August 2024 attack, will begin serving the sentence immediately. When he turns 18, a judge will decide whether he will complete the remainder of the term in an adult prison.

Rogers said she felt relief after the sentencing, although she noted the defense plans to appeal.

“I’m thankful to be finished with this chapter,” she told KWTX.

Jury Found Allegations True

In December 2025, a Navarro County jury found the aggravated assault allegations true after a trial in the 13th State District Court. In juvenile cases, a “true” verdict functions the same as a guilty verdict in adult felony court.

Violent Classroom Attack That Left Candra Rogers Blind In One Eye

The assault happened during lunch when a behavioral teacher called for help with an aggressive student. Rogers said she arrived first and found the classroom ransacked.

During the outburst, the boy threw chairs and a wooden coat hanger as Rogers and another administrator tried to calm him down. The hanger struck Rogers’ right eye, knocking it out of its socket. Surgeons later removed the eye.

Rogers said she has forgiven the student, though she remains frustrated with the system.

“I am angry with the student’s parents. I am angry with our state system because no educator should go to work and end up being airlifted to a hospital,” she said.

Judge Called Case One of the Hardest

Navarro County District Attorney Will Thompson said 13th State District Judge James Lagomarsino described the case as one of the most difficult of his 17‑year career.

The student, now 12, remains in state custody as the appeal process begins.

GoFundMe for Candra Rogers

A GoFundMe created for the former administrator’s recovery is still collecting donations for anyone who wishes to support.
