How can you beat the heat?
The Tri-State area has seen record highs in temperature over the past couple of days. In New Jersey, the highest temperature was recorded in Old Bridge of 110 degrees.
Newark broke an old record of 101 in 1957 – they reached 108 today. Under extreme weather as such, it is highly advised to stay indoors and remain cool.
Here are some ways you can beat the heat. If you choose to go outdoors, we also have some tips to stay cool.
Beat the heat
1. Go to a movie – An afternoon matinee is less expensive than going at night. It is a great way to beat the heat. Sitting in the cool air while enjoying a great flick.
2. Pool, beach, or Local River – Depending on how hot it is, some may not want to sit in the heat while relaxing along the shore or poolside. However, dipping in the water is a quick way to cool down.
3. Limit outdoor activities to cooler mornings or evenings.
4. Drink plenty of water. – The body quickly gets dehydrated in the heat. Even if you feel like you’re not thirsty, drink water anyway. Avoid any alcoholic, sugary, and caffeinated beverages. Water is best in extreme heat.
5. Take a cool shower – this will lower the body temperature when you’re hot.
6. Choice of clothing – Your choice of clothing could matter in your overall comfort in the heat. Wearing cotton, linen, silk, natural fibers, and fabrics that have SPF protection will be cooler for the body.
Remember to drink lots of water. Check on the elderly and the sick.
