Community rallies to support beloved musician and teacher Vance Gilbert’s cancer battle and recovery

Acclaimed singer-songwriter, performer, and teacher Vance Gilbert—known for his soulful songs, humor, and decades of heartfelt performances—has recently been diagnosed with cancer on one of his tonsils. While doctors are optimistic about a full recovery, treatment will involve intensive rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, requiring Gilbert to step away from performing for several months.

This pause in touring means a significant disruption to his livelihood, affecting both his devoted fans and the venues that have long supported his music.

Besides moral support, the community is stepping up to help Gilbert during this time by creating a fundraiser. So far, the GoFundMe has raised more than $44,000. Alternatively, those are also encouraged to purchase some of Gilbert’s music.

Born in Philadelphia and raised in Willingboro, New Jersey, Vance Gilbert is a folk singer-songwriter. He started as a jazz singer, switched to folk music, became a regular on the open mike circuit in Boston and toured with Shawn Colvin. He has recorded sixteen albums, including Side of the Road, three of them on Philo/Rounder Records.
