Gianna, now 11, once stood on NBA star Stephen Jackson’s shoulders and declared, “Daddy changed the world.” Today, she faces rhetoric aimed at discrediting her father’s memory.
Her mother, Roxie Washington, struggles with how to respond. She wants to protect Gianna but also help her stand up for herself.
“Do I run up to the school and act like ‘Who did what?’ Or do I let her fight her own battle?” Washington told BET. “I don’t want her to feel like she’s by herself. But I want her to be able to stand on her own two feet.”
Some conservative voices are still spreading false claims about George Floyd’s death.
But official reports confirm Floyd died from cardiopulmonary arrest caused by police restraint.
Derek Chauvin, the former officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes, was convicted of murder in 2021. He is now serving a 22-and-a-half-year prison sentence.
Still, some campaign for his release. They spread misinformation that distorts Floyd’s legacy and impacts his daughter Gianna’s daily life.
