Mosie “Mama” Burks, the legendary lead vocalist of the Mississippi Mass Choir, has passed away.
Burks died on July 7, 2025, at the age of 92.
Known for her electrifying performances and unwavering faith, Burks helped define the sound and soul of modern gospel music. She captivated audiences around the world with her powerful voice and joyful spirit.
Humble beginnings
Born in Forest, Mississippi, Burks rose from humble beginnings in a family of migrant field workers. Her early life was marked by hardship—losing her mother at 21 and taking on the responsibility of raising her younger siblings.
Despite these challenges, she pursued education and music, eventually earning degrees from Jackson State and Tougaloo College while working as a maid and telephone operator.
Mosie “Mama” Burks gospel music career
Burks’ gospel journey took a pivotal turn in the 1990s when she joined the Mississippi Mass Choir. Initially hesitant, she was persuaded by Katrina Williams, the widow of choir founder Frank Williams, to lend her voice to the ensemble. Her breakout performance of “This Morning When I Rose” became an instant classic, showcasing her signature hair shake and commanding stage presence. From that moment, Mama Mosie became a cornerstone of the choir’s identity.
Throughout her career, Burks toured internationally, performing in Japan, Italy, and South Africa where she sang for Pope John Paul II.
Her solo album, Mama Burks, released in 2005, featured the award-winning track “I Got A Grip,” which earned Song of the Year at the Mississippi Gospel Music Awards. She remained active in ministry and music well into her late 80s, retiring in 2020 after a final performance celebrating the choir’s 50th anniversary.
Legacy
Tributes have poured in from fans, fellow musicians, and faith leaders, honoring a woman whose voice stirred souls. The Mississippi Mass Choir described her as “a gospel pioneer” whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.
Funeral services are scheduled for July 16, with a musical celebration of her life the evening before.
