Chicago Hero: Earl Abernathy rescues abducted infant amid gridlock traffic; GoFundMe launched
Earl Abernathy, a local father and delivery driver, turned a traffic jam into a moment of heroism with a life-saving discovery that’s now capturing hearts nationwide.
Earl Abernathy was a hero in action
Stalled in traffic near St. Vincent’s Church on Chicago’s South Side, Earl Abernathy heard faint cries—and discovered an abducted 7-month-old baby hidden behind overturned church steps. His quick actions helped rescue the infant hours after a West Englewood carjacking.
Baby Reunited with Family
After alerting authorities, Abernathy stayed with the child, comforting her until emergency responders arrived. Thanks to his swift action, the baby was safely reunited with her family, who had launched a frantic search after her sudden disappearance. Local police praised Abernathy’s vigilance and compassion, calling his intervention “a miracle in gridlock.”
GoFundMe Launched After Minivan Breakdown
In a twist of fate, Abernathy’s aging minivan broke down later that evening. A community-led GoFundMe campaign was launched to help him replace the vehicle—his primary source of income and family transportation. Within hours, donations began pouring in, with supporters moved by his selfless act and heartfelt interviews that followed.
“I’m just glad she’s safe. That’s all that matters,” Abernathy shared. “God put me there for a reason.”
