EWING, N.J. — A GoFundMe campaign for 15‑year‑old Ke’yair “Key” Christie has surpassed $23,000 as the New Jersey teen continues treatment for osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer, according to the fundraiser.

Viral Video Brought National Attention

Key gained widespread recognition after a Facebook video showed content creator Samuel Weidenhofer surprising him and his family at a Walmart. In the video, Weidenhofer presented Key with a Saquon Barkley jersey and tickets to a Philadelphia Eagles game. The moment drew national attention and later helped amplify the family’s fundraising efforts.

Ke’yair “Key” Christie’s Seven Years of Treatment and Relapse

Key has been fighting cancer since age 8. The fundraiser describes his medical history as extensive and marked by repeated setbacks.

“Key has been fighting for his life since he was 8 years old,” the campaign states. “He is 15 now — and in those seven years, he has endured more than most people face in a lifetime.”

According to the fundraiser, Key has experienced four relapses. “Four times this disease came back trying to steal what cancer never had the right to take,” the campaign reads. “And four times, Key stood up and fought again.”

Major Surgeries and Complications Key Christie Has Endured

Key has undergone numerous surgeries, including a limb‑salvage procedure that resulted in a leg amputation in August 2020. The fundraiser notes that the amputation occurred the same day his grandmother, who also served as his foster mother, died.

Since then, Key has had eight thoracotomies, a recent lobectomy, and what the campaign describes as “countless hospital stays.” His service dog, Dexter, died while Key was recovering from surgery.

Chemotherapy preserved his life but caused long‑term effects, including hearing loss and vision impairment, according to the fundraiser.

Family is “Out of Options”

Key was hospitalized this week after experiencing sudden paralysis. His family said doctors later determined the episode was caused by extremely low potassium levels.

The fundraiser states that the family recently received devastating news: “We’re out of options.” Traditional chemotherapy is no longer available to him.

“The only road forward now is experimental clinical trials,” the campaign reads. Key is currently pursuing a trial in New York, described by the fundraiser as “a frontier of hope in a sea of uncertainty.”

Understanding Osteosarcoma

Osteosarcoma is the most common malignant bone tumor in children and adolescents, though it remains rare overall. About 400 children and teens in the United States are diagnosed each year, reports CHOP.

The cancer typically develops in the long bones, most often near the knee or shoulders, and usually appears during periods of rapid growth. It can spread to other organs, most commonly the lungs.

Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent bone pain
  • Swelling or a noticeable mass
  • Limping or difficulty walking
  • Bone fractures with minimal trauma

Standard treatment usually involves chemotherapy and surgery. Many patients undergo limb‑sparing procedures, though amputation is sometimes necessary depending on the tumor’s size and location.

Because osteosarcoma can return after treatment, children often require long‑term monitoring and, in some cases, additional surgeries or clinical trials.

GoFundMe Created to Help Key Christie Along His Fight

The campaign states that contributions will support:

  • Travel and lodging for treatment
  • Medical expenses not covered by insurance
  • Ongoing care and recovery needs
  • Quality‑of‑life support
  • Basic household stability while the family focuses on Key’s health

The fundraiser emphasizes the family’s determination to continue seeking treatment.

“We are trusting God to go before him”.

The GoFundMe remains active as Key prepares for the next phase of care.
