2014 update: A look into an excessive lawsuit filed by Reginald Doucet’s family
He was on his way to Drai’s Hollywood, the rooftop nightclub at the W Hotel.
When he returned home to Playa Vista later that night, he engaged in an argument with his cab driver.
That’s when both the driver and nearby residents called the police.
By the end of it all, Doucet would be fatally shot by a rookie LAPD officer.
What happened to Reginald Doucet Jr?
Authorities say the shooting occurred about 3:30 a.m. when two patrol officers responded to a disturbance call in the 5200 block of Crescent Park West and found a man “yelling and behaving erratically,” according to an LAPD statement.
The man was later identified by the county coroner and his ex-sports agent as 25-year-old Reginald Doucet Jr, a former defensive back at El Camino College and Middle Tennessee State University.
The shooting occurred just outside Doucet’s condominium building, said his neighbor and former agent, Chris Ellison.
Authorities reported officers on the scene attempted to calm down Doucet Jr and talked him into putting on his boxers, but he ran when they tried to apprehend him.
They approached him again, but he ran once more, authorities said.
Police allege after trying to detain Doucet for the third time, he allegedly attacked officers by punching them in the face and tried to reach for one of the officer’s gun.
A statement that has been refuted by friends says the account doesn’t sound the like Reggie they knew.
“Maybe he was belligerent, I don’t know, but I have never seen him drunk. Never. Violent? Never,” he said. “He was an outstanding young man who was trying to make a better life.”, a friend told the LA times.
