Ex-Atlanta cop charged with murder in fatal shooting of unarmed driver, Devaris Rogers
A former Atlanta cop who blindly fired shots into a car of an unarmed driver has been charged with murder.
James Burns, a former Atlanta cop who blindly fired shots into a car of an unarmed driver, has been charged with murder.
Burns was fired for the killing of Devaris Caine Rogers.
The three-year force veteran faces charges of felony murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and violation of his oath of office, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Earlier this week, an internal police investigation found that Burns fired at Rogers’ car as it drove away from — not toward — the officer.
Investigators said evidence shows officer James Burns shot at the fleeing vehicle without knowing if the suspect he was chasing was inside.
“He had no idea who was in the vehicle. No idea if that was the vehicle he should be concerned with. He just discharged his weapon,” Sgt. Warren Pickard told local media.
