The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office announced 39-year-old Hasani Best was shot and killed by Asbury Park police.
Hasani Best fatally shot by police
According to authorities, officers were called to a two-family residence shortly after 9 p.m. Friday due to a report of a loud domestic dispute between a man and a woman.
The woman was outside and police tried to talk to the man through the upstairs apartment door.
Police say he opened the door at various times and they could see he was armed with a knife.
Best allegedly continued to hold the knife despite repeated requests from the police to drop the knife, according to police.
Authorities report officers attempted to use a taser, but it was reportedly not effective.
At about 10:10 p.m., an Asbury Park officer shot and fatally wounded Best, according to officials.
Authorities report officers and EMS reportedly rendered medical aid, and EMS transported Hasani Best to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, N.J., where he was pronounced dead at 10:31 p.m.
Investigation
The attorney general’s office is investigating as required by a law that went into effect last year mandating an investigation by the office of any death stemming from an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in his or her official capacity.
“The investigation is being conducted by the Attorney General’s Office, pursuant to a law enacted in January 2019, P.L.2019, c.1, which requires that the Attorney General’s Office conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody.”
