Teen inmate named valedictorian at Rikers Island graduation ceremony
The July 16 ceremony marked a powerful milestone for incarcerated youth, many of whom overcame significant educational and personal obstacles to earn their diplomas.
Tylik Thomas, 18, stood as valedictorian among 63 graduates at East River Academy within Rikers Island. It was a rare moment of triumph.
Major milestone for youth at Rikers Island
The July 16 ceremony marked a powerful milestone for incarcerated youth. Many of them overcame significant educational and personal obstacles to earn their diplomas.
“In some of the harshest and roughest living conditions known to man, we found light in a place where darkness and negativity reign supreme,” Thomas said in his speech, broadcast by ABC 7 New York.
Resilience was the graduation theme that echoed throughout the event, highlighting the determination of students who pursued education despite incarceration. Principal Tonya Threadgill emphasized that “coming to jail isn’t the end, it’s a chance to start over and build a better life”.
About East River Academy
East River Academy operates in partnership with the New York City Department of Education and the Department of Correction. The school focuses on literacy and academic recovery, addressing that up to 75% of incarcerated individuals have low literacy skills.
Path forward for Rikers Island valedictorian Tylik Thomas
Thomas, who is serving time for a non-violent weapons charge, is scheduled for release in November. His uncle, present at the ceremony, described the moment as “joyful” and said he saw a reflection of himself in his nephew.
“I should have done it way earlier. This is a long time coming — it’s finally come,” Thomas said. “Don’t waste your time, wasting your freedom”.
As Thomas prepares to cross the same bridge that once brought him to Rikers, he carries with him not just a diploma, but a renewed sense of purpose — a symbol of what’s possible when education is offered, even in the most unlikely of places.
