On Saturday, October 11, The Cary Theater will present a live-scored screening of the 1998 action film BLADE, starring Wesley Snipes. The screening is a part of Shaolin Jazz’s acclaimed CAN I KICK IT? series, a distinctive multimedia event that blends cinema with an immersive musical experience.
Live-Scored Screening of film BLADE
Shaolin Jazz co-founder DJ 2-Tone Jones will perform a real-time score of the film, integrating elements of funk, soul, hip-hop, rock, and other genres to complement the narrative. His approach involves layering music over and under the original film audio, enhancing each scene while preserving dialogue and plot continuity.
“This isn’t just playing a DJ set during a movie,” said DJ 2-Tone Jones. “We incorporate the music with the movie so you can still follow the plot and hear the dialogue. It’s about weaving music into the film’s rhythm—scoring it, scene by scene.”
About the film
The film follows Blade, a half-mortal, half-immortal vampire hunter determined to avenge his mother’s death and prevent a technologically advanced vampire sect from summoning an ancient evil. The story’s intensity and visual style make it an ideal canvas for Shaolin Jazz’s innovative scoring technique.
