New Jersey man shot and killed 10 years after brother’s fatal shooting
According to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, the shooting occurred around 7:35 p.m. on the 100 block of Monmouth Avenue, located on the city’s west side.
35-year-old Tyshan Small was fatally shot on the evening of September 11 in Asbury Park, N.J., family says.
Details: Tyshawn Small fatally shot
According to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, the shooting occurred around 7:35 p.m. on the 100 block of Monmouth Avenue, located on the city’s west side. Small was struck in the back and pronounced dead at the scene. Another man sustained injuries during the incident, though officials have not released further details.
While the prosecutor’s office has yet to disclose additional information, family members identified the victim as Tyshan Small in an interview with Asbury Park Press.
Duane Small, 56, described his cousin Tyshan as “a good kid” who was “killed for basically nothing.” He expressed deep sorrow for Tyshan’s mother, who is now grieving the loss of a second son to gun violence.
“My aunt is going through it because she lost her other son 10 years ago to the same thing—street violence, gun violence,” Duane Small said. “Nobody deserves that … to be shot in the back like that.”
Duane Small attributed the violence to systemic issues plaguing the community. He emphasized limited economic opportunities and the proliferation of firearms and narcotics.
“This violence is going on all over,” he said. “There’s a reason why this is happening. You can go by the Sheffield Avenue market and see young Black men standing out there, but you go around the area where the work is being done and you don’t see them working.”
He added, “If they’re not dying from drug overdoses, they’re dying from gun violence.”
Second killing in the family in 10 years
Duane Small told the Asbury Park Press Tyshan’s killing is the second in the family in nearly a decade.
According to reports, Jamar Small was shot and killed on December 15, 2015 in Asbury Park. Small was a brilliant former standout athlete at Asbury Park High School. The 24-year-old had just earned a degree in business administration from Texas Southern University, where he also played football when he was tragically shot and killed.
The Asbury Park community is once again reeling from the impact of senseless violence, as families and neighbors grapple with the loss of another promising life.
