Tyra Spaulding, a former Miss Universe Jamaica contestant, has died at age 26 from an apparent suicide, authorities confirmed.

Details of Tyra Spaulding’s death

On Tuesday evening, Sept. 23, Spaulding was found dead in her Kingston apartment, according to the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Corporate Communications Unit. Relatives reportedly discovered her hanging in her bedroom.

Spaulding had recently shared her mental health struggles on YouTube, where she spoke candidly about suicidal thoughts and therapy. In a Sept. 5 video, she said, “I’m fighting for my life… I’m definitely in a battle right now.”

She also described feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about her future. “My mind is trying to kill me,” she said. “If I do nothing, I am going to die.”

In an earlier video posted Aug. 31, Spaulding revealed she had quit her job and regretted the decision. “My mental health just plummeted,” she said.

Statement from Miss Universe Jamaica organization

The Miss Universe Jamaica organization confirmed her death and honored her legacy in a heartfelt Instagram tribute.

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of the beautiful Tyra Spaulding,” the post read. “Her light, grace, beauty and kind spirit touched every life she encountered.”

The organization added, “We keep Tyra’s family, friends, and loved ones in our heartfelt prayers as we celebrate the beautiful life she shared.”

Spaulding competed in the 2023 Miss Universe Jamaica pageant and was known for her radiant presence and entrepreneurial spirit.
