About “CAN I KICK IT?” series
Shaolin Jazz’s “CAN I KICK IT?” series integrates live DJ scoring with cult and classic films, offering audiences a reimagined cinematic experience. During the screening, DJ 2-Tone Jones will perform a live score using a curated blend of funk, soul, hip-hop, rock, and other genres. The music will be mixed in real time to align with the film’s narrative and emotional beats, including both action sequences and romantic scenes.
“This isn’t just playing a DJ set during a movie,” said DJ 2-Tone Jones. “We incorporate the music with the movie so you can still follow the plot and hear the dialogue. It’s weaving music over and under the film audio, just scoring the film, scene by scene.”
About The Last Dragon
The Last Dragon, directed by Michael Schultz, follows martial arts student Leroy Green (played by Taimak) on his quest to reach the “final level” of mastery. Along the way, he becomes romantically involved with singer and video disc jockey Laura Charles (played by Vanity) and confronts multiple adversaries, including a vengeful record producer and a violent rival fighter. The film explores themes of personal growth, resilience, and the tension between power and love.
Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a discussion with Shaolin Jazz, offering insight into the creative process behind the live scoring and the broader goals of the “CAN I KICK IT?” series.
