Ajike Owens, a 35-year-old mother of four, was fatally shot in June 2023 by her neighbor, Susan Lorincz, through a locked door.
OCALA, Fla. — Donations to Ajike “AJ” Owens’ GoFundMe campaign have soared past $460,000 following the release of Netflix’s documentary The Perfect Neighbor. The film, which premiered earlier this month, reignited national attention to Owens’ tragic death and the legal aftermath.
What happened to Ajike Owens?

GoFundMe in support of Ajike Owens’ children
Since the documentary’s debut, supporters have flooded the fundraising page with donations and messages of solidarity. The campaign, originally launched to support Owens’ children, now reflects a growing movement for justice and reform.
Ajike’s mother, who now cares for her grandchildren, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support. “This means the world to our family,” she said in a recent update. “We’re building a legacy in AJ’s name.”
About the Perfect Neighbor
Director Geeta Gandbhir, known for her Emmy award winning work, used police bodycam footage and firsthand interviews to expose systemic failures and racial bias. The documentary’s emotional impact has sparked renewed calls for legislative change and community accountability.
Lorincz was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 25 years in prison on November 25, 2024. One of Owens’ children witnessed the shooting, adding urgency to the family’s healing journey.
As viewers continue to share the film and donate, Owens’ story remains a powerful reminder of the human cost of unchecked hostility and flawed laws.
