Shooting at Lincoln University’s homecoming leaves one dead, 6 injured

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — One person was killed and six others injured Saturday night during a shooting at Lincoln University’s homecoming, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred near the International Cultural Center around 9:30 p.m., shortly after the school’s football game.

The gunfire disrupted a tailgate and Yardfest event, sending crowds fleeing, according to authorities. Emergency responders treated several victims at the scene and transported others to hospitals in Delaware. Officials have not released the conditions of the injured.

Alleged Suspect

Law enforcement detained one individual carrying a firearm. Investigators are still working to determine whether multiple shooters participated in the incident. Authorities emphasized that the shooting does not appear to be a planned mass attack on the campus.

Lincoln University, located 55 miles west of Philadelphia, is the nation’s first degree-granting Historically Black College and University. Officials briefly locked down the campus, but they have since lifted the order. The shooting site remains under investigation.

Support offered for those impacted

The university used social media to announce that it will provide counseling services for students and staff. The university expressed sorrow over the violence, noting that homecoming is traditionally a time for alumni to reconnect and celebrate.

This incident adds to a troubling pattern of violence at football games and homecoming events nationwide. Five people sustained injuries Friday during a shooting near Howard University in Washington, D.C. None of the victims were students.

In Alabama, two people died and 12 others were wounded following homecoming games at Alabama State and the Tuskegee-Morehouse rivalry. A juvenile has been charged with capital murder.
