Kelechi Iroegbu, a graduate of Alvin Independent School District in Texas, has launched a national fundraising campaign to eliminate school lunch debt, beginning with his former district. His GoFundMe initiative seeks to raise $17,987.78 to cover outstanding meal balances for 1,972 students.

“When I was a kid, having a negative balance meant you couldn’t get the regular hot lunch,” Iroegbu told WKYC. “You got a peanut butter and jelly or cheese sandwich instead. No student should ever feel singled out over something as simple as lunch.”

Iroegbu is coordinating directly with Jennifer Odom, assistant director of Alvin ISD’s Child Nutrition Department. Once the fundraiser reaches its goal, the team will transfer 100% of the proceeds to the department to clear student lunch debt.

Iroegbu emphasized the broader impact of the campaign. “It messes with your self-confidence or self-esteem,” he said. “I think that as a community we can come together.”

Beyond this initiative, Iroegbu has demonstrated a sustained commitment to student welfare. He founded the Cougar Closet at the University of Houston to provide free clothing to students in need and has raised approximately $50,000 for charitable causes through Twitch streaming.
