A GoFundMe campaign is helping a grieving South Carolina family honor the life of Amos Ramon Gary, a beloved father, brother, and security guard who died protecting others during a mass shooting at Willie’s Bar and Grill on Oct. 12.

Gunfire erupted outside the packed venue on St. Helena Island, killing Gary, 54, along with three others and injuring twenty more. His family launched the fundraiser to cover funeral costs and seek justice for what they call a “senseless act of violence.”

“He was more than just a victim,” wrote his sister on the GoFundMe page. “He was a kind, loving, and vibrant soul who meant the world to everyone in his family and community.”

Beloved father and family man

Known affectionately as “Junior,” Gary was a father of two and one of 11 siblings. He grew up in Beaufort and worked several jobs to support his family, including part-time security at the bar. On the night of the shooting, witnesses said Gary tried to shield others from gunfire.

“My brother, even though he got hit multiple times, was trying to push people out of the way,” said his brother Johnny Gary in an interview with The Island Packet.

Bar owner Willie Turral echoed that sentiment, thanking Gary in a Facebook post for his courage and sacrifice. “He saved lives that night,” Turral wrote.

Gary’s family described him as a “gentle giant” with a big heart and a sharp sense of humor. He made it a daily ritual to send prayer texts to his siblings and mother. On the morning after the shooting, those messages never came.

“He carried my pain when I couldn’t,” Johnny said. “He was the kind of man who sat with you in silence and made you feel heard.”

The GoFundMe also aims to support legal efforts as the family seeks accountability. Despite hundreds of people at the scene, no arrests have been made. Gary’s siblings are urging witnesses to come forward.

“We need action,” said his sister Avis Renee Toomer in an interview with WCSC Live 5 News. “Show us you truly care by saying what happened. You can do it anonymously.”

Gary’s family hopes the fundraiser will not only ease financial burdens but also amplify his legacy.

“His life mattered,” Avis wrote in a tribute shared with The Island Packet. “His love for people, his kindness, and his light will not be forgotten.”
