The family of Cynthia Vann, a 55‑year‑old woman allegedly beaten to death by her hospital roommate in the Bronx, filed a notice of claim against New York City on Thursday. The filing begins a $20 million wrongful death lawsuit, accusing staff of negligence and failure to protect patients.

Patient Cynthia Vann Allegedly Attacked While Seeking Care

Vann entered Lincoln Hospital in September for treatment of a liver condition. Overnight, doctors told her family she was undergoing emergency surgery but did not explain why. Relatives later learned she had been beaten while asleep. Her roommate allegedly attacked her, causing a brain bleed. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide caused by blunt force trauma.

Police Arrest Roommate After Fatal Beating at Lincoln Hospital

Authorities identified the roommate as 44‑year‑old Racquel Haughton. Police said the attack left Vann in critical condition for more than two weeks before she died. Officials charged Haughton with manslaughter and assault. Records show Haughton had previously been arrested for assaulting a staffer and allegedly attacked a nurse hours after Vann was beaten.

Lawyers and Activists Demand Accountability

At a press conference, family attorney John Elefterakis vowed to keep the case in public view. “We will not go away, we will not let this get swept under the rug,” he said. Civil rights activists joined the family, stressing hospitals must protect patients and staff from known threats.

Family Promises to Continue Fight

Relatives said they will pursue justice until the city accepts responsibility. “It’s very disheartening; very upsetting that you go to a place for care, and then this happens,” said Melvin Vann, the victim’s brother. The family emphasized the lawsuit seeks accountability, not only compensation.
