Former UVA Student Sentenced to Five Life Terms in 2022 Shooting
A former University of Virginia student who killed three UVA football players has been sentenced to five consecutive life terms.
Sentencing Details
Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., 26, received life sentences Friday for three first‑degree murder convictions, two aggravated malicious wounding convictions, and using a firearm in commission of a felony.
A year ago, he pleaded to multiple charges in connection to the shooting.
The judge ordered the sentences to run consecutively, underscoring the severity of the attack.
Deadly Bus Shooting Kills 3 UVA Football Players
Jones opened fire Nov. 13, 2022, on a bus parked in a campus garage after students returned from Washington D.C. The shooting killed Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry, all members of the UVA football team. Running back Mike Hollins and student Marlee Morgan survived with injuries.
Shooter’s Background
Jones appeared on UVA’s 2018 football roster as a freshman running back from Petersburg, Virginia, according to the school’s website. He never played in a game and was not part of the program at the time of the shooting.
Community rallies to remember UVA football players
On November 13, UVA Chapel bells rang in honor of the three victims. A march on campus followed, where students and community members gathered for a memorial honoring Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry. Since the tragedy, GoFundMe campaigns have been created for each victim and their families. Each raised more than $170,000 in support.
