STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Izaiah Taylor, a 21-year-old college football offensive lineman, died Monday in a devastating house fire.

The blaze broke out just after 1 p.m. at his grandfather Gregory Edwards’ home on Rockcliff Court in the Water Edge community, per Fox 5 Atlanta. Firefighters arrived to find flames engulfing the residence. A neighbor warned crews that someone might still be inside.

DeKalb County Fire Rescue said crews entered immediately and located Taylor, already deceased.

Victim Identified

Edwards later confirmed the victim was his grandson. “I got a call from my neighbor about smoke. By the time I arrived, firefighters had control,” Edwards told Fox 5 Atlanta.

Taylor, listed at 6-foot-5, played offensive tackle at Georgia Military College and previously for Liberty University before entering the transfer portal. He was home in DeKalb County for the holidays.

Taylor, a Georgia native, played high school football at South Gwinnett. Recruiting profiles listed him as a promising offensive line prospect during the 2024 cycle.

ViaTech Atlanta launched a GoFundMe to support Edwards and his family. The fundraiser highlights Taylor’s bright future and the home’s role as a gathering place filled with love and memories.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
