Georgia couple convicted of killing 6-year-old for wetting the bed

A Georgia mother and her boyfriend were sentenced to prison for the killing of a 6‑year‑old boy, prosecutors said Monday. The Henry County District Attorney’s Office announced the sentences after a jury found Less Thompson Jr. guilty earlier this month.
District Attorney Darius Pattillo said the case devastated the community. He noted that the child died at the hands of the people who should have protected him. He added that he hopes the resolution brings peace to those who loved the boy.
Georgia child homicide: Boyfriend Convicted of Murder
Thompson was found guilty Oct. 3. He will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole. The judge issued the sentence on Oct. 22 after the jury convicted him of malice murder, three counts of felony murder, aggravated assault and first‑degree cruelty to children.
Prosecutors said Thompson repeatedly punished the child in the days before his death. They argued that the abuse escalated and ultimately caused the fatal injuries.
Georgia child homicide: Mother Pleads Guilty to Lesser Charge
The boy’s mother, Deshante LaShawn Beard, pleaded guilty to second‑degree murder the same day. She received a 30‑year sentence, with 25 years to serve. Prosecutors said she failed to protect her son and participated in the abuse.
According to the jury’s findings, both adults punished the child for wetting the bed. The repeated discipline caused severe physical stress that led to his death.
Abuse on Day of Incident Detailed in Court
The fatal incident occurred June 13, 2021. Court documents showed that after the child wet the bed again, Thompson forced him to run laps and do pushups in the heat. The boy collapsed from exhaustion and lost consciousness.
Investigators said the couple waited at least four hours before calling for help. Detectives testified that the delay worsened the child’s condition.
Medical Experts Describe Fatal Injuries
Doctors who testified during the trial described signs of repeated abuse. They said the boy suffered shock and brain swelling. They also confirmed that the punishment on June 13 caused the injuries that led to his death.
Prosecutors said the case highlighted the dangers of unchecked abuse and the need for swift intervention.
