Rising New Jersey boxer struck, killed by car, prosecutor says

OLD BRIDGE, N.J. — Davon Porter, a fast‑emerging figure in New Jersey’s amateur boxing community, died early Saturday after a vehicle struck him on Route 9, according to investigators.

Porter, 30, of New Brunswick, attempted to cross the southbound lanes near Quality Chevrolet around 1:25 a.m., the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said. A Honda CR‑V driven by a 30‑year‑old Manalapan man hit him as he entered the roadway. Emergency crews arrived quickly, but Porter was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation remains active.
Driver’s Identity Withheld
Authorities have not released the driver’s name. As of Sunday, officials had not said whether charges were expected as the inquiry continues.
Boxer Davon Porter Earned Respect Across New Jersey
Porter gained momentum in the state’s amateur boxing circuit, competing in tournaments and training at Gleason’s Jersey Shore. He also volunteered with New Jersey Give a Kid a Dream, a program that supports at‑risk youth through boxing mentorship.
He advanced through several rounds of the New Jersey Golden Gloves, ultimately earning a championship title. Earlier this year, Gleason’s Jersey Shore highlighted his achievements, noting that Porter became the gym’s first athlete to reach the Golden Gloves preliminary rounds. Coaches praised his discipline and daily commitment.
Community Reflects on His Impact
Teammates and coaches described Porter as focused, generous, and deeply committed to the sport. Many said he pushed younger fighters to improve and set a strong example in the gym.
