COLUMBIA COUNTY, N.Y. — Jackie Salvatore made history on Jan. 2 as the first Black woman ever elected sheriff in New York State. She took the oath of office to uphold the New York State Constitution, becoming Columbia County sheriff and a powerful role model for young people across the region.
Jackie Salvatore Becomes Columbia County Sheriff
Salvatore, 60, served four years as undersheriff and spent 28 years with the New York State Police. Her long career shaped her leadership style and prepared her for the county’s top law‑enforcement role.
Salvatore says she plans to expand programs, strengthen training, and ensure her team has a vested interest in their work. She also stressed the importance of placing experienced people in key roles to support her leadership.
A Ceremony Marked by Community Support
NYS Assemblymember Didi Barrett administered the oath during a ceremony attended by family, county officials, and law‑enforcement colleagues. The event marked a historic milestone for Columbia County and the entire state.
According to CBS 6, Salvatore’s decades of service with the state police and her tenure as undersheriff shaped her approach to community safety, fairness, and accountability.
Jackie Salvatore Outlines Her Priorities for Her First Term
“Being elected as Columbia County Sheriff is a profound responsibility and an honor that I respect and hold dear,” Salvatore said. She thanked residents for their trust and pledged to lead with integrity.
Salvatore outlined her top priorities: public safety, combating the opioid crisis, and ensuring fairness in the criminal justice system. She will serve a four‑year term through December 2029, with a focus on transparency in every decision.
