GoFundMe launched for son of Washington D.C. officer killed after being struck while aiding stranded driver
The fundraiser aims to secure the future of Bennett’s 3‑year‑old son, Elijah, as the family mourns the loss of the 32‑year‑old officer and longtime community mentor.
Washington, D.C. — A GoFundMe has been launched to support the young son of Metropolitan Police Officer Terry Bennett, who died after being struck by a speeding driver while helping a stranded motorist on Interstate 695 just before Christmas. The fundraiser aims to secure the future of Bennett’s 3‑year‑old son, Elijah, as the family mourns the loss of the 32‑year‑old officer and longtime community mentor.
What Happened to Officer Terry Bennett
Officer Bennett was assisting a driver who ran out of gas in the eastbound lanes of I‑695 near South Capitol Street at about 10:10 p.m. on Dec. 23. He stood outside his marked cruiser when a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed hit him, police said.
Law enforcement officers at the scene immediately provided aid. Bennett was rushed to a hospital with critical injuries. He entered a coma and remained on life support for 18 days. He died on Jan. 7.
The stranded motorist Bennett was helping was not injured.
Driver Charged With Second‑Degree Murder
Authorities arrested 47-year-old Jerrold Coates. Prosecutors charged him with second‑degree murder in connection with the crash.
Officer Bennett’s Service and Community Impact
Bennett served nearly eight years with the Metropolitan Police Department, most recently in the First District. His death marks the 127th line‑of‑duty death in MPD history.
Before joining the force in 2018, Bennett spent more than a decade mentoring students at Ballou High School. He worked as an associate dean and assistant football coach, guiding young people and encouraging them to take pride in their community.
His contributions included:
- Coaching and mentoring student‑athletes
- Supporting families through school programs
- Building trust with residents in Southeast D.C.
- Leading with compassion and consistency
Colleagues described him as a steady presence who always stepped in to help.
Family Shares Emotional Tribute
Bennett’s wife wrote on the GoFundMe page that he was “the most devoted father” to their son, Elijah. She said he cherished simple moments, from car rides to family trips, and took pride in creating memories.
She shared that Bennett brought Elijah to Disney World twice before he turned two, calling those trips some of their happiest days.
Her message emphasized his love for mentorship, football, and the community that raised him. She said he died doing what he always did, helping someone in need.
GoFundMe Focused on Elijah’s Future
The GoFundMe campaign supports Elijah’s long‑term care, education, and stability. Bennett’s family said his values and legacy will continue through his son, even as they learn to navigate life without him.
