Georgia woman partially paralyzed after sword attack, family launches GoFundMe
Constance Payne, 54, suffered life‑altering trauma during the November 2025 assault in Long County.
A Georgia woman is courageously fighting for her life after a violent altercation turned into a sword attack and left her with catastrophic, permanent injuries.
Georgia Sword Attack Leaves Innocent Bystander Severely Injured
Constance Payne, 54, suffered life‑altering trauma during the November 2025 assault in Long County. Her family said she lost her left hand, sustained a severe traumatic brain injury that required a brain graft, and now lives with paralysis on the left side of her body.
She arrived at Memorial Health in Savannah by air ambulance for treatment.
Constance Payne’s Family Says Independence Was Lost in a Single Night
Her son, Matthew Payne, said the attack changed every part of her life.
“In a single night, my mom lost her independence and now faces a long road ahead, including extensive rehabilitation, specialized therapy and full‑time care,” he told WSAV.
Moreover, he noted that Medicaid does not cover the level of rehabilitation she needs. She will require a handicap‑accessible home, medical equipment and ongoing assistance to manage daily life.
Sheriff’s Office: Woman Caught Between Two Men Fighting
After an investigation, the Long County Sheriff’s Office determined that Payne was an unintended victim. Deputies said two men fought at a home on Meadow Road when the attack occurred, and they caught her in the middle.
Both men were arrested:
- Hector Manuel Esparza‑Reyes — charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery .
- Jorge Abdiel Esparza‑Gress — charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery
According to the sheriff’s office, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed detainers on both men. ICE determined they had overstayed their visas. Jail records show authorities are holding Esparza‑Reyes at Screven County Jail and Esparza‑Gress at Appling County Jail.
Georgia Sword Attack: Surgeries, Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care Ahead
Payne has undergone several surgeries since the attack. Her family said she faces months of rehabilitation, ongoing therapy and permanent disability. They also expect long‑term medical expenses and major home modifications.
Her son said the family is doing everything possible to support her recovery, but the financial burden is overwhelming.
