South Florida woman reportedly set on fire by roommate, GoFundMe launched to support medical costs
Rachel Price continues to endure daily pain from the March 17 attack, which left her with second and third‑degree burns across her face and body.
Hollywood, FL — A South Florida woman is beginning a long and painful recovery after her roommate allegedly set her on fire during a domestic dispute, leaving her with severe burns and life‑altering injuries. Rachel Price, who lives in Hollywood, Florida, says she is grateful to be alive as she faces months of medical treatment and rehabilitation.
South Florida woman set on fire deals with ongoing pain and a difficult healing process
Price continues to endure daily pain from the March 17 attack, which left her with second and third‑degree burns across her face and body. She told WPLG Local 10 that simple tasks, including eating and talking, have become difficult. She must avoid sunlight for at least a year and take multiple medications as part of her recovery.
Alleged domestic dispute
Police say the incident began with an argument between Price and her roommate, 48‑year‑old Kymesha Tarpley. According to investigators, Tarpley left their apartment, returned with a gasoline canister, and then threw gasoline on Price before igniting it. Price said Tarpley “watched me burn,” describing the moment as surreal and devastating.
A fire marshal who lived in the unit below heard Price’s screams and rushed upstairs with a fire extinguisher, helping save her life. Price said she hopes to thank him in person. Tarpley, initially charged with battery and arson, now faces an upgraded charge of attempted murder.
Community Support Grows as Medical Bills Mount
As Price begins her long recovery, she is unable to work and is facing significant medical expenses. A GoFundMe campaign has been created to help cover her treatment, rehabilitation, and living costs during this period.
What the GoFundMe Says
The fundraiser describes the attack as “horrific and traumatic,” noting that Price suffered third‑degree burns after gasoline was thrown on her and she was set on fire. The organizer writes that Price’s “physical and emotional pain is unimaginable,” and that her life “has been turned upside down in an instant.”
The GoFundMe emphasizes the financial strain Price now faces:
- She cannot work during her recovery.
- She requires extensive medical care.
- She will need ongoing support as she rebuilds her life.
The organizer urges the community to help, stating that “every donation, no matter the size, will make a meaningful impact.” The page expresses hope that Price can find “strength to move forward” with the support of caring individuals.
A Long Road Ahead for Rachel Price
Price says she is still processing the attack and hopes to understand why it happened. Despite the trauma, she remains focused on healing and is grateful for the support she has received so far. She told Local 10 she is “not the one to ask for help,” but she appreciates every contribution made toward her recovery.
