ALCU.ORG presents ‘What to Do When You’re Stopped By The Police”

Last year, we wrote an article on the “do and don’ts” when you are stopped by the police.

It is imperative each citizen knows their rights when being stopped and actions that could be taken if you feel your rights were violated.

What to do when you’re sropped by the police

The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union), an organization that acts as a “guardian of liberty, working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country.”, produced the video to keep citizens aware of their rights.

Take a look at the comedic approach as New York comedian Elon James White talks about the best way to respond to police and what rights you have.

The video is based on the ACLU’s know-your-rights card “What to Do If You’re Stopped by Police, Immigration Agents or the FBI”.

The video is not made to poke fun at the issue, but to bring awareness about an issue that affects a community at large.

“White brilliantly uses humor to make this vital information accessible in a way few other people could,” Dennis Parker, Director of the ACLU Racial Justice Program, said. “But the use of comedy should not shroud the reality that racial profiling remains a serious nationwide problem. We rely on the police to keep us safe and treat us all fairly. But the practice of relying on an individual’s apparent race, ethnicity, national origin or religion rather than on evidence of criminal activity when deciding whom to stop, search or arrest is at odds with our shared American values of fairness and justice, and betrays the fundamental promises of equal justice under the law and freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures.”
