In Memoriam: Cheryl Hickmon, Beloved Delta Sigma Theta President, Dies

Cheryl Hickmon, the President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., has passed away, according to a statement by the sorority.

“It is with great sorrow that Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. shares the passing of our beloved National President and Chair of the National Board of Directors, Cheryl A. Hickmon. President Hickmon transitioned peacefully on January 20, 2022 after a recent illness.”

A native of Connecticut, Hickmon was elected President during the last National Convention, which took place in Atlanta in November 2021.

Hickmon served Delta for more than 37 years. She was a Golden Life Member initiated in the Alpha Xi Chapter at South Carolina State University in 1984, where she graduated with a degree in Professional Biology. Hickmon was also a current member of the Hartford Alumnae Chapter.

Prior to her induction as the 27th President of the sorority, she was the First-Vice President of the organization from 2017 to 2021. Previous to that role, she served in other capacities on the organization’s executive leadership including the Regional Director for the Eastern Region, the South Atlantic Region’s Regional Representative and acted as co-chair on various tasks forces created internally.

Outside of Delta’s leadership, Hickmon has served with the Children’s Defense Fund movement – The Daughters of Tubman Sisters of Truth.

Professionally, Hickmon was a Clinical Laboratory Project Manager and Senior Clinical Technology Supervisor.

She was an avid skier and a founding member of the Thrillseekers, Inc. Ski and Adventure Club of New York, and a member of the National Council of Negro Woman, and the NAACP.

The Black Greek Letter Organization was founded on the campus of Howard University on January 13th, 1913 by twenty two collegiate women.

This year, the organization celebrated 109 years of sisterhood and the continuance of its historic legacy.
