Maryland family seeks justice after man fatally shot outside D.C. hotel
A family is demanding justice after Akim Toure was shot and killed while attending a hotel party in D.C.
Akim Toure, a 27-year-old IT specialist from Maryland, was fatally shot Sunday night near Union Station in Washington, D.C., leaving his family reeling and pleading for justice.
Maryland man Akim Toure was reportedly protecting woman when shot and killed
Toure was killed near the entrance to the YOTEL parking garage on New Jersey Avenue NW, following an argument that police say began at a rooftop pool party. The dispute, allegedly involving a woman, escalated quickly, and Toure’s relatives believe he was acting to protect her.
“He was trying to stand up for someone—and he lost his life for it,” said cousin Alexcia Bobb-Williams. “He wasn’t a bad guy. Go on his LinkedIn—he’s a professional, a corporate IT expert. He worked hard and looked out for his family.”
Originally from Sierra Leone, Toure immigrated to Maryland as a child and built a life centered around tech and caregiving. Loved ones say he was deeply devoted to his mother and sister, especially after his father’s passing.
“I want justice for my son,” Toure’s mother told NBC Washington, overwhelmed outside their Prince George’s County home on Monday.
Active investigation
Hotel officials said the incident occurred adjacent to their property and that staff are assisting law enforcement. Police sources confirm the shooting took place only minutes from the Capitol and just steps from a nearby fire station.
“Literally always looking at the next convention to go to,” Bobb-Williams said. “Just anything to level up and help his family.
D.C. police are actively searching for a suspect described as a man with dreadlocks, wearing a white shirt and shorts, last seen driving a black sedan—possibly a Honda. No arrests had been made as of Monday evening.
