A Houston crossing guard is receiving widespread recognition after a video captured him stepping in front of a moving vehicle to protect students walking. The incident occurred October 15 at the intersection of Ella and Grovewood in the Timbergrove neighborhood near Sinclair Elementary School.
Houston Crossing Guard Protects Students
The footage shows a driver attempting to pass through the crosswalk while two children and an adult were still crossing. Michael Phil, the school’s crossing guard, intervened by placing himself between the car and the pedestrians, prompting concern and praise from local residents.
Intersection Safety Concerns
Community members say the intersection has long been a safety concern, ABC13 reports. According to the report, residents who frequently use the crosswalk have reported multiple near-misses involving children and adults. Some have personally experienced close calls with speeding vehicles and say the area lacks adequate traffic controls.
Corrective Action
In response, neighbors have been working with local leaders to explore solutions such as raised crosswalks, flashing signage, or a stoplight. While those improvements remain under discussion, many credit Phil with helping prevent potential accidents through his daily vigilance.
Phil acknowledged the dangers of the job, noting that some drivers speed through the area without regard for pedestrians or crossing guards. Despite the risks, he emphasized his commitment to student safety and said he would not hesitate to act again.
Although some in the community have called him a hero, Phil prefers to describe himself simply as a crossing guard doing his job.
GoFundMe campaign created to support Houston crossing guard Michael Phil
Following the incident, local parents launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “Mr. Michael is our Superhero!” to show appreciation for his actions. The fundraiser highlights his consistent presence, positive attitude, and dedication to keeping children safe in all weather conditions.
Timbergrove is part of TIRZ 12, a tax increment reinvestment zone. Residents hope the crosswalk will be included in future development plans aimed at improving pedestrian safety.
