Yolonda E. Lawrence, television writer behind Empire and Sistas, dies at 56

Yolonda E. Lawrence, a veteran television writer and producer whose credits include Empire, Bel-Air and Sistas, has died.

Her agency, CAA, confirmed to Deadline she died unexpectedly on October 10 in Los Angeles. A cause of death has not been released.

She was 56.

Yolonda E. Lawrence’s Early Life and Education

Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Lawrence developed an interest in television writing after attending a taping of The Cosby Show with her mother, per Deadline.

She graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in communications in 1991. Shortly thereafter, she moved to Los Angeles to begin her career in television.

Career Beginnings

Lawrence worked as a production assistant and coordinator on several television series, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Relativity and 413 Hope Street.

She later assisted showrunners learning the discipline of writing and producing television stories.

Breakthrough and Notable Credits

In 2006, Lawrence secured her first staff writing position on CBS’s drama Shark.

She went on to contribute to numerous television series, including Lincoln Heights, Reaper, Star-Crossed, Witches of East End and The Nine Lives of Chloe King. Her most recent work was Tyler Perry’s Sistas and Peacock’s Bel-Air.

Yolonda E. Lawrence’s Mentorship and Advocacy

Colleagues described Lawrence as a talented writer and a dedicated mentor. She supported young writers, particularly Black creatives, and encouraged them to pursue careers in television.

Her commitment to mentorship and representation was widely recognized within the industry.

Her Legacy

Lawrence is survived by her mother and two siblings.

Lawrence’s career spanned more than three decades and included contributions to some of television’s most popular dramas.

Her influence as both a writer and a mentor continues to resonate within the entertainment industry.
