San Diego approves $30M settlement in teen police shooting
16-year-old Kanoa Wilson was fatally shot by San Diego police in January.
SAN DIEGO — The San Diego City Council on Tuesday approved a $30 million settlement for the family of 16-year-old Kanoa Wilson, who was fatally shot by police in January. The payout is among the largest in U.S. history, surpassing the $27 million awarded to George Floyd’s family in Minneapolis.

Officials said the settlement underscores the gravity of the case.
Surveillance and police body camera footage showed Wilson fleeing gunfire inside a downtown train station before encountering Officer Daniel Gold. The lawsuit alleged Gold fired “instantly, without any warning,” striking Wilson in the upper body as he ran past.
Councilmember Speaks on Accountability
Councilmember Henry Foster III grew emotional during deliberations, voicing fears for Black youth.
“If only you could understand the fear I feel when my son leaves the house,” he said. Foster questioned reform since Floyd’s death, asking, “Where’s the progress? Where’s the protect and serve? Better yet, where’s the accountability?”
Police Response and Investigation
San Diego Police Department confirmed Gold is on administrative assignment while the shooting remains under investigation. The lawsuit stated Gold did not identify himself as an officer until after firing. Wilson was pronounced dead less than an hour after arriving at the hospital.
