Authorities said a suspected gas leak ignited in the basement of the Tower Road building. The blast caused a fire, triggered a partial collapse, and left the structure uninhabitable. Two women died, including Nduthu. More than 20 people were injured. The cause remains under investigation.

The explosion occurred shortly after 2 p.m. while PECO Energy crews were on site responding to reports of a gas odor, per NBC Philadelphia.

Family Mourns a Devoted Mother Muthoni Nduthu

Nduthu’s family described her as a devoted Catholic and a beloved grandmother, and mother of three adult sons.

Clinton Ndegwa, Nduthu’s eldest son, said his mother, who was originally from Kenya, was looking forward to spending time with her family in North Carolina over the Christmas holidays, The New York Times reported.

“We’re immigrant kids, first generation,” Ndegwa said, per the newspaper. “She worked to try to provide for her family. She liked serving people and took pride in that.”

A Life of Determination

Friends and relatives said Nduthu worked hard to build a stable life for her family. More than a decade ago, she partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County to build and purchase a home for her sons, reports USA Today. She completed the program’s required “sweat equity” while working full time and attending school.

During the home dedication, she emphasized the effort behind the achievement. “This is not a giveaway program. You have to work so hard,” she said.

Community Support, GoFundMe Information

As the investigation continues, support for Nduthu’s family has spread across the region. Neighbors, coworkers, and community members have shared condolences and amplified the fundraiser. Many described her as a dedicated nurse who cared deeply for her patients.

Loved ones launched a verified GoFundMe to support her family. Organizers said the funds will help cover funeral costs and provide stability as they begin the long healing process.
