DALLAS, Texas — BLK, a dating app focused on Black singles in the United States, has released its second annual State of Black Singles Report.

Black dating trends: BLK State of Black Singles Report

The study, based on responses from more than 5,000 users, outlines shifts in dating behavior, app engagement, and relationship expectations.

According to BLK, the findings indicate increased interest in long‑term connections, expanded definitions of digital boundaries, and changing attitudes toward intimacy and family planning. The company states that the report aims to document how users approach dating across age groups and regions.

Amber Cooper, Head of Brand at BLK, said the data reflects a move toward clearer expectations.

“People aren’t tired of dating apps; they’re just tired of unserious people,” Cooper said.

Key Findings From the State of Black Singles Report

BLK’s survey highlights several trends:

  • 75% of respondents seek serious, intentional, or marriage‑minded relationships.
  • 75% report high activity on dating apps.
  • 57.4% are comfortable with physical intimacy within the first few dates.
  • 70% consider hidden emotional intimacy a form of cheating.
  • 52.3% view keeping a dating app active after exclusivity as a breach of trust.
  • 77% say oral sex is at least somewhat important in new relationships.
  • 58.8% prioritize character and ambition over income.
  • 57.1% of Gen Z report celibacy or no current sexual activity.
  • 82% of Gen Z want or are open to marriage.

Black Dating Trends: Intentions and App Engagement

The report states that most respondents prefer intentional dating over casual arrangements. Only 14.1% identify casual dating as their primary goal. BLK notes that this trend contrasts with assumptions that dating apps primarily support short‑term interactions.

Although many users cite frustrations with inconsistent communication, 44.4% identify “people who aren’t serious” as their main concern. However, app engagement remains high, with most respondents checking platforms daily or several times per week.

Digital Behavior and Relationship Boundaries

The study outlines how respondents define digital loyalty. Many consider emotional secrecy, hidden conversations, or active profiles after exclusivity as violations of relationship expectations. Additionally, 63% say they wait until a relationship is serious before posting a partner online.

Financial Expectations and Dating Costs

The report shows flexible attitudes toward financial matters.

  • Nearly 59% prioritize personal qualities over income.
  • More than 67% support flexible approaches to paying for dates, including splitting costs or having the initiator cover expenses.

Gen Z Trends

Gen Z respondents report lower levels of sexual activity, with many citing personal well‑being as a factor. Despite this, most remain open to marriage and parenthood. The report also notes that 78% are open to non‑traditional family structures.

Overview

BLK states that the report is designed to document how Black singles navigate dating, communication, and long‑term planning. The company plans to continue releasing annual data to track changes in user behavior.
